Description
This photograph depicts men and women sitting at tables for a meal. The men's hats appear to be similar in style as if made for the occasion. Along one wall is a row of Girl Reserves holding the American flag, a banner with a cross in the top left corner, and a Girl Reserves banner. The same wall has a sign on it. The readable part of the sign says "Y.W.C.A. Building Campaign. Apr. 27 to May, 6th. Paul L. Davies, Chairman. B - Col. Warren Reilly, C - Col. Mrs. L. T. Smith, D - Col. Mrs. D. A. Beattie, A - Col. C. F. Crothers, A.B.C.D". On recto: "Rest assured, no silly hats for our 1989-90 capital campaigners." Photograph is mounted on white paper with this caption below it. Photograph is also torn on the left top corner. The Y.W.C.A. kicked off a 10 day, $125,000 annex campaign on April 26, 1925. Jean Rutherford was hired as a campaign professional and at the end of the 10 days $128,098 had been raised. The San Jose architecture firm, Binder & Curtis designed the annex. The cornerstone was laid May 21, 1926 and the building opened in December.
