Photograph was edited for publication purposes Pierre Salinger was born on June 14, 1925. He served as White House Press Secretary to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Salinger served as a United States Senator in 1964 from August to December after the death of Clair Engle. He was defeated by Republican George Murphy for the Senate seat in November 1964. Salinger was manager for the Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign and later became known for his work as an ABC News correspondent. He died on October 16, 2004. Photograph article dated May 23, 1964 partially reads "Our offices have had two prominent senatorial candidate visitors while stumping the Southern California territory this week. Cigar chomping Pierre Salinger, Democratic candidate for senatorial nomination--smoking like a chimney as usual--made a whirlwind tour of the plant Wednesday afternoon, stopping to shake hands all around and get acquainted." Salinger toured the Valley Times offices, located in North Hollywood. Salinger was campaigning for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate. He was running against Alan Cranston.
