Description
“Ashiho [Acheng] 1909.” Street scene of a snow covered road with shops lining both sides. The United Presbyterian Church started work in Ashiho in 1892 and the town was described as having mud walls and being irregularly laid out. James Stobie (b.1869) was appointed to Manchuria in 1894 and served in the Ashiho station with his wife Katherine Kirk Paton. The image is taken during the time of the Great Revival when interest in Christianity was at its height amongst the indigenous population and major inroads were being made into Korea.
