Description
View 1 (1989-1244). Southeast corner of 4th & J St. 1936 -- view 2 (1989-1245). Old Dawson House, now St. George Rooms. 1939. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. C, leaf 26. Corner view of a 4 story building; first floor on street level has a "Cafe" on the left front facade followed by a hotel with "Rooms"; entrance is indicated by a 2nd floor balcony advertising the "Office" and "Rooms"; 2nd, 3rd, & 4th floors are indicated by differing window decorations - 2nd floor has rounded arches; 3rd floor has triangular pediments and 4th floor has lintels; around the corner on the left is the "Cafe" of the facade and another business with a sign; quoins decorate the corners of the building. Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "Erected in 1856, known as 'The Dawson House' by G.V. Dawson, the building cost $65,000, the lot and furnishings $125,000."
