The park was named for the founder of First National Bank, John E. Hollenbeck, whose widow along with former Mayor of Los Angeles, William Henry Workman, donated two-thirds (21 acres) of the Hollenbeck's property to the City of Los Angeles in 1892. In the 1950s, the Golden State Freeway was built against its western boundary. Some of the Park's features include a man-made lake, rolling hills, towering palms, picnic areas, and even a skateboard park.
