Description
"Friedhof Port Elizabeth. Gräber von Geschw. Günther und Schw. Dietrich" ("Cemetery Port Elizabeth. Graves of Brethren Günther and Sister Dietrich"). Two graves in the center, the front one is a double grave. Behind these two graves a structure surrounded by trees. Behind the structure more graves.
The photographer is Schaberg. Willibald Paul Schaberg (1900-?) was a missionary in South Africa West from 1929 to 1939 and again from 1948 onwards. It is not known when he stopped working or died. -- Carl Günther, born in 1849 in Züllichau, Germany was a cloth-maker until he went to South Africa as a missionary in 1877. From 1877-86 he worked as a teacher at the assistants' school in Genadendal. In 1881 he married Clementine Schärf. From 1886-93 he was stationed in Mamre, from 1893-94 in Berea. In 1894 he went back to Genadendal where he stayed until 1897. In 1897 he went to work in Clarkson until 1899, when he went to Port Elizabeth. From 1902-03 he was on vacation in Europe. Günther died 1912 in Enon, South Africa. -- Clementine Günther, née Schärf, was born in 1856 in Genadendal. She worked as a teacher until she married Carl Günther. From 1881-1912 she worked as a missionary. She died in 1912 in Port Elizabeth.
