Description
Scrapbook of news clippings, correspondence, telegrams and corporate ephemera relating to Lee de Forest and his business ventures, primarily De Forest Wireless and American De Forest. Includes material on the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair; naval installations at Key West and Pensacola, Florida; patent litigation with the Marconi Company; and testing of the De Forest system on board the Chicago & Alton train lines out of Chicago, Illinois. Non-news items in the scrapbook include: a) Letter from Abraham White to Lee de Forest, dated 1 September 1905, regarding their personality clashes; b) "He Who Enters Here Leaves All Hope Behind: Guantanamo Bay, Cuba," card c) Handwritten note in de Forest's writing, dated August 31st at Pensacola, Florida, announcing that the test message was finally received in Key West, Florida by A. C. Curtis. Followed by telegram from Abraham White dated 1 September 1905, "Delighted. Have Commandant reported to Washington so we can get payment through shortly." d) Copy of message forwarded by American DeForest Wireless Telegraph on the Alton Limited, June 8th, 1905 (2003-34-734i) e) The Electrical Magazine news photograph of the De Forest Wireless Telegraph Station at Key West (2003-34-734h) f) Telegram from Abraham White to E. W. Humphrey, Dominion De Forest Wireless, regarding victory against Marconi, 13 April 1905. (2003-34-734f) g) Studio portrait of de Forest with two other people (2003-34-734g) h) Letter from Paymaster General, U.S. Navy, to the American De Forest Wireless Telegraph Co., dated 17 February 1905, awarding them classes at the League Island and Newport News Naval Yards. (2003-34-734d) i) Letter from Mr. R. G. Dykes, of Adel, Missouri, addressed to "Wireless Telegraph Man that tried his system on June 3rd, 1902, from the Chesebrough Building" j) Letter from de Forest and Abraham White to President D. R. Francis, congratulating him on opening day of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, and giving details about their own tower and wireless system (4 pages) (2003-34-734c) k) Telegrams sent between Kansas City and St. Louis by the American DeForest Wireless Telegraph Company during the 1904 World's Fair (Louisiana Purchase Exposition) l) Invitation to a reception to be given on the evening of Electricity Day, 14 September, by the Exhibitors of the Palace of Electricity, 1904 (2003-34-734b) m) Autographed photograph of Lee de Forest at his wireless telegraph transmitter/receiver (2003-34-734a) Loose items include American DeForest Wireless Telegraph Co. corporate literature and stockholder communications and loose pages from the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition souvenir book.
