Description
This circa 1900 postcard shows a Sacramento welcome party hailing down the steamer Edward Everett. Leaving Boston in January 1849, the ship arrived on the Sacramento River in Summer 1849. Its party of 170 were intent on three things: the discovery of gold, the spreading of Christian values, and the "implant" of New England civilization and "our principles upon the soil."
