Description
Annotation translation: [Comment on the rear of the mount:] "It should be remarked that it does not show the Golden Stool. The clear testimony of the missionaries Jost and Stamm (and the latter saw the Golden Stool in 1928, s. his report) is that the Golden Stool cannot be publicly displayed and photographed. Secondly the real Golden Stool is old, looks black and is entirely covered with gold leaf so that no wood is visible. See the article in Heidenbote June 1935. See also Rattrays' books, which are the main source of information. And see the letter from Ramseyer dated 24th June in a yellow envelope." - ["King Kwaku Dua" has been crossed out and replaced by] "Bantamahene". (PST).
Identity of photographer questionable.
Note translation: Negative probably retouched. (PST). - TG has written on the mount that The photo was probably taken by Dr. Sullivan and not by Ramseyer / Frobenius as mentioned in (D-30-0,2). (PST). - " ... The central figure in the picture is not the Asantehene Agyeman Prempe (...) [but] may be assumed to be Nana Agyeman Kofi, i.e. Asantehe Kwaku Dua Kuma." (McCaskie 1975). - According to a letter written by Timothy Garrard the person shown in the photo is the chief of Bantama, the Bantamahene Awuah, sitting with his own stool. According to this view the British visit occurred at the time of the interregnum, when there was no Asantahene
it was therefore the Bantamahene who received the British visitors. - The photo was published in a volume of the 'Illustrated London News' of the years 1880-1889. (PST). - What looks like a companion of this photograph is published in I. Wilks "Asante in the nineteenth century", plate II and entitled "The meeting of the Asantehene Kwaku Dua II and B. Kirby 1884", with the visiting colonial officer sitting prominently in the left foreground. (PJ 08.2002).
