Description
Photograph of a picture on behalf of the coronation of the emperor Haile Selassie I. On the upper half of the picture a white three-pointed star from which three lines are emanating. Above in two semi-circles two lines of an Amharic inscription, below the inscription "Haile Sellase I." In the upper part of the lower half from left a lion with an emperor's crown and a scepter in his paw, an orb, a Star of David with a three-pointed star, and an Amharic inscription. In the lower part from left the portrait of the empress, the inscription "Empereur Ethiopie", the portrait of the emperor, and the inscription "Couronné
2 Novembre 1930".
On the back of the picture a letter from Hermann Bahlburg to an unknown pastor. -- Original size 40 x 60 cm, colored. -- Hermann Bahlburg (1892-1962) was the leader of the Galla [Oromo] mission of the Hermannsburg mission in Ethiopia from 1927 until his internment in 1941. He was based mostly in Adis Abeba, where he promoted the founding of a German school and church. He was part of the first caravan to Aira and undertook several journeys to the newly established mission stations in Aira and Bedele. From 1941 to 1948 he was interned by the British occupying forces. Afterwards he returned to Germany, where he continued his work as missionary until he was banned by the leadership of the Hermannsburger Missionsanstalt. He was posthumously rehabilitated in 2007.
