Description
"The Council of Churches of Santa Clara County was founded in the spring of 1942. In 1999, the Council boasted a membership of 250 churches and religious organizations throughout California. There are 32 churches in Northern California. And in June of 1997 Vaughn Beckman, an openly gay man, was chosen to be the organization's executive director.." From Ted Sahl, "From closet to community: a quest for gay & lesbian liberation in San Jose & Santa Clara County" (2002), p.117. "
Photographs shows proponents of gay marriage outside the Santa Clara County government services building at Day of Marriage demonstration. Demonstrators hold signs that read, "Love does not discriminate", "We want equal right[s] not specia[l] rights", and "Wanted, a son in law". Reverend Vaughn Beckman is the man in the dark suit and collar in the first row on the far right.
