"Scanned from Pasadena Community Book, 1943, p. 237"Mr. Nay was born in Minneapolis in 1873 and moved to Pasadena with his family in 1884 when he was 11 years old, remaining in Pasadena for the rest of his life. In 1896, he founded a large plumbing and heating business where he was the proprietor and co-founder. In 1932 he became the 23rd Mayor of Pasadena, holding the position for nine years. During his time in office, he served on the committee that helped to establish the Metropolitan Water District, and assisted in pushing the Morris Dam project forward. In 1938 he was proclaimed Pasadena’s #1 citizen when he was awarded the Arthur Noble Civil Service Medal, which signified outstanding public service in Pasadena. While accepting the award, Mr. Nay said, “I owe everything I am and expect to be to Pasadena. This city is very dear to me. I have watched it grow from a country crossroads to a modern city. While I haven’t acquired a great deal of worldly goods, I have acquired a wealth of friends, which are to me life’s greatest treasure. What more could a city do for any man?” (erdman, 2009) In 1941 he was given the honor of being the grand marshal for the Tournament of Roses. Mr. Nay passed away in 1941 at the age of 68 (Edward O. Nay, city's 'no. 1 citizen,' dies at home during sleep., 1941).
