Michael Dixon article discussing the development of management as a profession, featuring Charles Handy. Dixon reveals that the current campaign to elevate management to a profession is centered on the recently established Council for Management Education and Development which is supported by three bodies, namely, the Confederation of British Industry, the Foundation for Management Education, and the British Institute of Management. Dixon then asserts that different types of management thinking/theorizing are required at different levels of corporate organization, with top level management relying on intuition to guide its decision, while lower levels require a more dynamic and interrelated approach. Based on relevant research, Dixon concludes that purely intellectual approaches to management learning have a subordinate role in the training structure for managers established by the British Institute for Management, which relies on developing key competencies in individuals. In this, and using studies from Charles Handy on the professionalization of management education, Dixon deduces that systematic and narrow approaches to management training, such as those involving instruction in competencies and the formal professionalization of management, may not prove effective approaches for future executives seeking to hone their management skills. He concludes the article stating that keeping management as a craft, rather than as a field of theory, remains the best method for acquiring management proficiency.
