This is side A of the fourth tape, from day two, of the annual Drucker Symposium of 1989. The topic of the day is “does bigness in a business have a future?”. Peter Drucker discusses three trends related to the future of “bigness” in business: mergers, retaining the market share, and the trend toward outsourcing service functions (e.g., help call centers). In particular, Drucker discusses that the trend is not toward a smaller business per se but a move away from big operations to concentrate on the business’ core activities. Drucker also discusses the importance of asking questions about what size and structure is the optimal size and structure for a particular business noting that business size is a function of strategy: the size has to be appropriate for the business to accomplish its core activities. He further emphasizes the importance of having a right ratio between tasks and sizes when examining whether “bigness” in business will have a prosperous future or not. This topic continues on side b of the fourth tape.
