Description
Using the Headlands as a focus, this film includes San Francisco-based environmental artist Tim Collins (Artist in Residence for Architecture/Environment during 1992) talking about the natural world supporting our societal lifestyle and economic well-being by reflecting on the lifestyles found here in California. Working across art, sense, and philosophy to develop projects related to nature, culture, and public space, Collins created Levitation, a 16-foot beam balanced 8-feet out of a 3rd story window at the Headlands Center for the Arts. An agricultural water trough mounted on the inside end of the beam, holding 22 gallons of water, is slightly leaking. On the outside, a small functional seat and handlebars supports a 180-pound man who is intently attempting to hold his balance against the weight of the leaking water. Six tape recorders with loop tapes repeat over and over again. Inspired by the Marin Headlands proximity to San Francisco, Collins develops new research around the relationship between biodiversity, aesthetics, and spirituality building upon previous work on postindustrial ecologies and current work on cultural ecologies.
