Description
The Walnut Grove Bridge was also known as the Strauss-Trunnion Basule Bridge of the two-leaf type. The first bids to build the bridge were accepted back in November 1900. Construction began on October 11, 1913. The Walnut Grove Bridge officially opened on Sunday, July 16, 1916. The dedication ceremony consisted for music, dance, food, and refreshments. Children from Walnut Grove, Grand Island, Courtland, Isleton, Vordern, and Ryde were the first to officially march across the bridge. After the march, a high dive off the bridge took place. The bridge was built by Jenkins & Wells and cost $87.680.
