Description
Part 1 of a two-part recording of the events dedicating Firestone Fieldhouse (the gym and sporting facility on Pepperdine University's Malibu campus), which occurred on September 20, 1975, and culminated with a speech by President Gerald Ford. The events (with time signatures) are as follows. The recording begins with President Ford's arrival, as "Hail to the Chief" is played by the El Toro Marine Corps Band; Pat Boone performs the national anthem and actor John Wayne recites the "Pledge of Allegiance" (01:18); the Pepperdine University a cappella choir performs "God Bless America", "America the Beautiful", and "Sweet, Sweet Spirit" (04:10); President William Banowsky speaks about the university and introduces Leonard K. Firestone (12:45); remarks by Mr. Firestone and presentation of a plaque by Richard Seaver (17:45); and the conferring of the honorary Doctorate degree on President Ford, with assistance by Richard Scaife (23:05).
