Shows the mill and two trees (center), side of a building at right, indians in grass at left, buildings in the distance across the river. Text below the photo: First Discovery of gold in California, January 19th, 1848. Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1867, by A. Roman & Co., in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington D.C. Negative no. 28,463 (4 x 5 in.) b&w negative and color transparency. From the collection of Dr. Dean L. Mawdsley.
