Description
In these interviews, retired Jewish, Chicano, and white electricians from International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 11 based in Los Angeles, California, discuss their roles as activists fighting against racial discrimination in the trade, which had a history of predominately white and male membership with exclusion and segregation based on race and gender. This includes discriminatory hiring practices as well as discrimination on jobsites; and advocating for better safety and health conditions. Retirees interviewed include: Gary Alexander; Arch McNair; Carl [Hightella], Max Dubin and his wife, Betty; Dan Cohen; Lucinda Larkin (Ralph Larkin’s wife); Leo Waxman; Alex Ende; Frank [Stricklen]; and Joe Salas. These tapes also contain footage taken of speeches given at an IBEW Local 11 50th anniversary party.
