Description
Bust-length portrait. 2010-5153. Born in 1839 in Maine. Arrived in California in 1855 via the ship, Galatea. Spent time in gold mining before acquiring a store. Eventually active in Pacific Coast Steam Navigation Company, owned ranches, involved in mining and lumber and various other business enterprises. Served in California Senate, as Governor and as U.S. Senator. Died in 1923.
