Photograph. "Then and now -- the 'forty-niners' required 16 days to reach Death Valley from Los Angeles. Essex Challenger [the car] made the grind in 6 hours 19 minutes during nationwide Challenger Week demonstrations. The 'Challenger' was paraded through Los Angeles all last week at a 'killing' pace of 2½ miles per hour behind the 'covered wagon.'" -- handwritten on verso. "Essex 'Challenger,' which made record run to Death Valley, also matched burros' pace in processions in high gear." -- Examiner clipping attached to verso, dated 16 March 1930. Streetscape.
