Title supplied by cataloger. Groundbreaking for the Academy's new headquarters, located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills, took place in September 1973. The building, designed by Maxwell Starkman, was officially dedicated on December 8, 1975. When the building opened, the Margaret Herrick Library occupied two floors and contained more than 8,000 books, pamphlets, and periodicals.; Established in 1928, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences library was formed and was later named for Margaret Herrick, the Academy's first librarian and long-time executive director. In 1991 the library moved from the Academy headquarters on on Wilshire Boulvard to the Fairbanks Center, located at 333 S. la Cienega Boulevard in Beverly Hills. Photograph caption dated October 13, 1975 reads, "Walter Mirisch, president of Motion Picture Academy, in library of new building."
