View of a street in the middle of the foreground which proceeds into the photograph; on the right side is a power pole and the side of a one story structure with a thin cypress in front of the window on its side; the entrance of the structure faces the road going into the photo; on both sides of the road are tall trees and on the extreme left is a hedge; tombstones can be seen behind the one story structure.
Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento.
"St. Joseph's Cemetary, situated at the corner of 21st & Y street, was purchased in the summer of 1864 by the congregation of St. Roses Church, and was consecrated by Archbishop J.S. Alemany, of San Francisco on May 7th, 1865... The cemetary embraces 20 acres of ground..."
