Description
The Valley to Vietnam series, produced by Sacramento Public Library, traces the arc of experience of Vietnam era veterans living in the Sacramento, California area. Lt. Gen. (ret.) John F. Goodman was born in Sacramento, raised in Carmichael, and educated at Encina High School before heading off to Arizona State University and a stellar football career that got him drafted by the New Orleans Saints. Yet, with the bugle's call, Goodman was off to Vietnam and a tour with the 1st Infantry Division as a LRRP team leader. After exploring various careers, Goodman returned to the military as a Marine aviator with VMA 223. His career trajectory led to further time in the military as a strategic planner, then retirement and current role as a policy consultant for the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
