Khama III became king of the Bamangwato in 1875 and he was baptized into the Lutheran church via the London Missionary Society. François Coillard was the first missionary of the Société des missions évangéliques de Paris (Paris evangelical missionary society) who went in Barotseland to evangelize the Lozi people.
