A full-length studio portrait of an unidentified African American Union soldier from the 22nd Colored Infantry Regiment, turned slightly to the right. The soldier has a holster at his left hip, is holding a pistol in his right hand by his thigh, and is wearing gloves and a cap. The chevrons in his uniform sleeves seem to indicate that is is a First Sergeant. A stamp on the verso reads "Lochman & Bretz, artists, Newville, Cumberland Co., Pa. ; Negatives preserved" Title from verso.
