Petersen was the founder and president of the Petersen Publishing Company who published such automotive-themed titles as Hot Rod, Motor Trend and Car Craft as well as titles including Tiger Beat, Teen, and Guns & Ammo. Photograph caption dated September 28, 1956 reads, "Robert E. Petersen, publisher and campaigner for highway safety for youthful motorists, left, receives the California Safety Council's first annual Distinguished Service Award from the council's president, Roger W. Jessup."
