Title supplied by cataloger. William Banning (1857-1946) was one of eight children of Phineas Banning and Rebecca Sanford Banning - and one of three who survived into adulthood. William, along with his brothers, Joseph and Hancock, had been running a steamship line to Catalina Island since 1884, and in 1892 purchased a controlling interest in the island with the intention to develop it as a resort. The brothers quickly introduced many attractions, including two dance pavilions, a bandstand, an aquarium, a Greek amphitheater, and inclined railway from Avalon to Lover's Cove, and a golf course. The Banning brothers owned Santa Catalina Island until World War I, after which they sold it to gum-chewing magnate, William Wrigley, Jr. William Banning passed away in 1946. Portrait of William Banning, son of Los Angeles harbor developer, Phineas Banning and his first wife, Rebecca. Mr. Banning looks dapper in his gray jacket, white shirt, and gray/black striped tie.
