Description
Annotation translation: "It is the custom in Mbembe that evey year the village elders take a sheep, a goat or a dog and sacrifice it to the ancestors. The animal is placed on the village square, the elders come and lay their own guilt, what they have done wrong, on the animal. The animal is then led out of the village and hung up on a tree. If, in its death-struggles, the animal looks back into the village, the guilt has not been requited. But if it looks away into the forest or the bush, then these sins have been forgiven, and the ancestors are satisfied again. If they do not accept the sacrifice, however - if the animal looks back into the village - a second sacrifice must be made. [Missionary] work is especially hard in Mbembe." - "Printed in the Wanderer, 1938/2."
- "Cl. Wanderer 1938/2."
