Photograph was edited for publication purposes Los Angeles County was officially declared a disaster area on July 21, 1960 as up to six fires raged out of control, including fires in Sunland-Tujunga, San Dimas Canyon, San Gabriel Canyon, Big Pines, and Magic Mountain. Photograph caption dated July 22, 1960 reads, "Sgt. Larry Tyndall of North Hollywood Division of Los Angeles Police Department checks over charred ruins of $55,000 home of Walter Braunheim, 8221 McGroarty St., Sunland, destroyed in raging foothill fire, for signs of looting. Police units are kept busy chasing unauthorized persons away from blackened areas, especially five burned out homes."
