Craig Wynett, General Manager of Future Growth Initiatives at Procter & Gamble, shares his thoughts on Peter Drucker. He begins by describing his first meetings with Drucker during his consulting work with P & G. While looking back at these meetings Wynett remembers his awe of Peter Drucker and says, “…it was like going to have an audience with the Pope.” He recalls advice that Drucker gave him, specifically, “The bottle neck is always at the top of the bottle,” and, “Don’t speculate, pilot.” Wynett relates various ways in which Drucker taught through the use of parables, and gave candid while humorous advice. Towards the middle of the interview he relates Drucker’s emphasis on demographics, specifically in relation to P & G’s acquisition of Clairol. He then discusses the importance of demographics in regards to the decrease in the birthrates in countries like Japan. In the second half of the interview, Wynett refers to Drucker as, “The Godfather of Management,” and explains Drucker’s insistence on learning from those he teaches, whether it was in his consulting work or graduate instruction.
