Description
Central Livery Feed and Stable was founded in 1852 and changed hands several times in the decades that followed. The stable sold and boarded horses in addition to renting out carriages and buggies. At the time of this photo, it was under the management of Walter Ruscoe, an English immigrant. He arrived in the United States in the 1880s and gained his citizenship in 1898. To the left of the livery is a sign advertising the Sacramento Camera Club, a social group focused on photography which met in the office of Dr. I.G. Shaw. The Camera Club hosted photography demonstrations and held exhibitions to display member work before beginning to offer photography classes and assisting with larger art exhibitions at venues like the Crocker Art Gallery.
