Description
The Chinese inscription on this photograph states: "United States Second City Dancing Party at Hong King Lum" Numerous couples pose for the camera in dancing position at the Oct. 13, 1932, dance commemorating the second anniversary of the establishment's new location. The cafe was established in 1929 at 308 I St. and moved to 304 I St. in 1930, where it remained until 1970, at which time the business was moved to 419 J St. The restaurant holds the distinction of being one of the first area businesses to install, during the summer of 1931, an evaporative cooler, known as a swamp cooler. The restaurant closed in 2004, after 98 consecutive years of operation.
