Description
The Chinese inscription on this photograph states: "United States Second City Dancing Party at Hong King Lum" The October 13, 1932, dance commemorates the second anniversary of the establishment's new location. Numerous couples pose for the camera in dancing position. The cafe was established in 1929 at 308 I Street and moved to 304 I Street in 1930, where it remained until 1970, at which time the business was then moved to 419 J Street. The restaurant holds distinction, in what was still a pre-air conditioning era, for being one of the first area businesses to install, in summer 1931, an evaporative cooler, known as a swamp cooler. The restaurant closed in 2004, after 98 consecutive years of operation.
