Colonel Jaime Flores Grijalva (right), commander of the 3rd Brigade in San Miguel, El Salvador, stands outside a building with another army officer. The colonel is dressed in military attire and carries ammunition. He is returning to San Agustín, El Salvador, after a five-day guerrilla occupation of the town. The Colonel, now deceased, is among 32 Salvadoran military officers accused of directing, ordering, or participating in the operation that killed almost 1,000 people (half of them children and adolescents) in December 1981 in El Mozote and its surroundings. In January 2018, a Salvadoran court recognized the events as war crimes and crimes against humanity.
