Description
Engraving of sailboats, paddle steamers, and junks with shoreline in the distance. "Shanghigh" written on reverse in one set of handwriting; "1868 Edw. McLaughlin 68/1919 San Jose" written in another hand. [McLaughlin died in 1919 in San Jose] Edward McLaughlin likely acquired this souvenir image on his voyage to Eastern Asia. According to his obituary, he was aboard the first steamer to leave for "the Orient' in 1866, making a tour of the world before he arrived in San Jose.
