Description
These 45 recordings consist of speeches given by Congressman Jerry Voorhis. Though most recordings are separate from one another and not part of a larger cohesive address, Voorhis ' topics and ideas are similar and consistent throughout. In Parts 1-4, Congressman Voorhis argues against imperialism and big business war interests. He urges partnership with China, appropriate war-time economic measures, and greater responsibilities taken by Congress. Ever in favor of building an international coalition for peace, Voorhis is also concerned with war and post-war economic measures. Particularly, he wants to ensure that veterans and widows will be cared for after the war, advocating for an expansion of Social Security. Part 5 contains a newscast, followed by another address by Voorhis about the importance of social security in Part 6. An unknown speaker promotes the purchase of war bonds in Part 7. In Part 8, Voorhis recounts the abuses of the Standard Oil Company against the Navy, citing this as an example of the evil of monopolies. He continues to support regulations that protect farmers and the purchasing power of the people in Part 9. In Part 10 he discusses the results of a recent survey regarding war-time domestic and foreign policy. In Parts 11-13 Voorhis is concerned with the voting rights of soldiers, the government 's responsibilities to buy surplus food from farmers to put towards the school lunch programs, and the oil crisis in the western U.S. In Part 14 he discusses the property rights and purchasing powers of civilians, while Part 15 contains another advertisement. Voorhis picks up again with domestic economics and foreign policy, especially with regard to deflation following the war, but with his addresses interspersed with advertisements and music (Parts 17 and 19-23). In Parts 24 and 26, Voorhis examines the role of Congress with regard to other government entities, with the recording in between containing a reading of a psalm. Parts 27-29 and 31 contain a religious hymn set to organ music; Part 30 contains a more jazzy tune. Parts 32 and 33 are advertisements for restaurants and cosmetic products. In Part 34, Voorhis returns to discuss constitutional law and civil procedure in the House and Senate, as well as measures to ensure lasting peace after World War Two. Part 35 consists of two musical numbers, “Always" and “I Love You Truly". In Part 36 Voorhis speaks about prisoner negotiations with Japan, domestic agriculture, and the post-war economy. Part 37 appears to come from after the war, in which Voorhis comments on a recent election and speaks about the 20th century as “the American century" with respect to foreign policy. The next three parts continue this discussion, with additional attention paid to social security, taxes, national sovereignty, and the U.S. economy. In Part 41, Voorhis discusses oil, the sales of war bonds, the Office of Price Administration, and inflation. In Part 42, he talks about congressional matters. The final three addresses are from the end of World War Two, and discuss the harsh bombing measures against the Axis Powers, as well as closing with Voorhis ' thoughts on the economy. Audio Notes: Most recordings contain 5-10 seconds of silence at the beginning. Some have sounds of static throughout. In several of the songs, background chatter can also be heard.Additional Descriptive Notes: Disc 1 - 1937-09-09, [?] Virginia, United States Recording High Fidelity Electrical Transcription Disc 2 - 1943-03-09, Sound Studios Inc. of Washington D.C.
