A steam shovel is digging amidst construction rubble at the northeast corner of American Avenue and Fifth in Long Beach. Men are grouped at the side of the site, watching the action. A row of single-story houses stand behind the empty lot and a brick building, left, has a partially obscured sign that states "Bartlett, contractors". Trolley lines run above the intersection.
