Description
Annotation translation: "Grassland."
Annotation: "Grasland."
Note: Cliché-Text: "Mlle Wuhrmann en voyage". (Wuhrmann, A., 1917. Beschreibung zu den Lichtbildern aus Bamum. E-30-0,6).
Note translation: Cf. the text "Mlle Wuhrmann en voyage." (C. M. Geary, E-30-0,7 and E-30-0,8). - It is not finally clear which woman is in the picture, see the discrepancy between the caption and the annotation. But since Ms. Wuhrmann has written the text which follows and which refers to Mrs Ammann, it seems likely that it is a photograph of Mrs Ammann on horseback. (LG 11.2000 and PJ 04.2001). - "Travelling in Cameroon requires a lot of time, a lot of patience, and now and again much optimism and a happy spirit. Once you have passed the terminus of the railway, and said farewell to that form of transport of the 'civilised world', journeying becomes slow, with an almost mediaeval restfulness. In the interior of Cameroon one rides on horseback, or one lets oneself be carried by hammock. Everything one needs for life in the interior has to be carried on the shoulders of strong men. The Government has built so-called rest-houses everywhere, about 2-3 hours journey from each other, big compounds in which travellers can find accomodation and spend the night with their animals and their carriers. Naturally a rest-house is nothing like a European hotel. But the traveller, tired from the journey, sleeps in the simple hut as well as he would in the soft bed of a Swiss hotel."
