Description
Photograph of a young Walapai Indian mother (squaw) with child in her arms, Hackbury, Arizona, ca.1900. She stands in front of two Indian blankets hung on a wooden wall -- one blanket with a cross pattern, the other with a diamond and stripe pattern -- with the child cradled crook of her left elbow with her hands clasped in front of her. She is wearing a long plaid dress under a patterned shawl or blanket around her shoulders. Her dark hair has cropped bangs and otherwise hangs just above her shoulders. She is barefoot.
