Description
The unedited transcript of Phalana Tiller’s interviews with participants of the 2013 Omidyar Network Executive Forum for the June 2013 episode of Drucker on the Dial. First, Richard Wardell of Landesa, talks about the work his organization does with governments and other agencies to design, advocate for, and help implement programs that deliver secure land rights to people in the developing world, who rely on the land to make a living. Wardell says that property rights are a very important and fundamental component of the opportunity to work your way out of poverty. Next, Premal Shah, co-founder and president of Kiva.org, says that the mission of Kiva is to connect people through lending, and to alleviate poverty through its website. He shares that visitors who come to the site, can go through profiles of entrepreneurs, individuals primarily in the developing world, and lend money. Shah says that the Omidyar Network has been its largest funder, and has helped Kiva attract great executive talent through Omidyar’s human capital services. He also believes that the Omidyar Network has also provided good, sound advice, helping Kiva become a safe place to make an impact on another entrepreneur. Then, June Hardin, an Arkansas-based Kiva borrower, explains how Kiva has made her small, custom poetry company possible. Next, Chris and David Mikkelsen, founders of Refugees United, talk about their relationship with the Omidyar Network. Chris Mikkelsen says that as soon as they came into contact with the other members of the Omidyar Network, their mobile technologies widened extensively. He also says that he typically finds that many of the peers in the network face the same challenges. David Mikkelsen adds that because they are all first-movers, it is valuable to have someone support you as you go through your first steps. Chris Mikkelsen advises not to grow too fast, and suggests growing fast enough for scale, but not so fast that you lose control. Then, David Simms, who chairs the board of the Opportunity International Network, talks about his work at Bridgespan, developing a leadership and careers practice, to try and figure out how to attract, develop, and recruit great leaders for nonprofit organizations. Next, David Wachtel, senior vice president of marketing, communications, and partnerships, at Endeavor Global, talks about his work with companies that want to scale up. Then, Bob Pilon, chief development officer of One.org discusses the way the Omidyar Network has had a significant impact on One’s capacity to deliver its mission. In addition, G.O., an investee, and spoken word artist from Cape Town, South Africa, talks about the reading and writing workshops he holds in his township and recites a poem. Lastly, Adam Rifkin, co-founder and chief executive officer of PandaWhale, describes his open, public website that lets anybody publish interesting content for anybody in the world to be able to access, use, and see. Rifkin also explains why the organization is named PandaWhale. Several of the attendees go on to share what they would like to be remembered for. The transcript also contains the thoughts of Rick Wartzman, The Drucker Institute’s executive director, on what he believes Peter Drucker would have thought of Google Glass.
