Description
Photograph of Yeng You, Korea. "No. 1 Catholic Church 'St. Patrick's'No. 2 The Convent (this looks rather imposing, but it has one entire wing devoted to the Industrial School and other departments are dispensary and catechetical rooms. Path in red is 'our alley' or the road leading down from our hill to the town.No. 3 The rectory and mission compound, which includes a school and several houses where the poor in the care of the mission are housed. This looks small in the picture, but takes up most of one square block. The rectory is a one-storey brick building.No. 4 Police station and 'Town Hall'No. 5 Chief's residenceNo. 6 Public school compoundNo. 7 Girl's school (public)No. 8 'Main St.' X- post officeNo. 9 The mountains to the S.W. which enclose our tiny valley, and the rice-fields.No. 10 The low section of the mountain behind our house - this rises very high - notice the rice-fields - white spaces marked off in squares. This is where we go for air in the burning heat of the Oriental summer, after the sun goes down.No. 11 A path (typically narrow) leading up to the main road, more commonly called 'automobile road.' This I believe is a military road leading to the Yellow Sea.No. 12 A pretty pine grove on a hillside -- one of our favorite walks is around this section where many of the Japanese and Korean officials live. We call it 'Millionaires Row.'No. 13 A little 'spy tower' from which our next-door neighbor, the Protestant minister, is able to watch his apple orchards and farm. Such towers are very common sights here.No. 14 The Protestant church and mission compound, directly opposite us, but at the foot of our hill.I am sorry the pagan shrine is not visable. It is just up the hill from No. 11."
