Description
Photograph of a young Walapai Indian mother (squaw) with child in her arms, Hackbury, Arizona, ca.1900. She stands in front of two Indian blankets hung on a wooden wall -- one blanket with a cross pattern, the other with a diamond and stripe pattern -- with the child cradled in the crook of her left elbow and her hands steadying the child. She is wearing a long plaid dress with a horizontal stripe near the hem, under a patterned shawl or blanket around her shoulders. Her dark hair has cropped bangs and otherwise hangs just above her shoulders. She is barefoot. She peers slightly to her right.
