Description
This circa 1925 photograph shows a dilapidated Oak Park Methodist Episcopal Church at Thirty Fourth Street, between Fourth Avenue and Y Street. The congregation was formed in 1895 under the direction of Reverend F.A. Morrow, meeting at Oak Park’s Daly’s Hall. The pictured church was built a year later, in 1896, for 4,000 dollars. With a growing following, the church was made to start collecting for a new building, starting in 1921. Delays in the construction of the new, 80,000 dollar structure were attributed to lagging funding which started out at a mere 25,000. By late-1927, the new church had been completed under the leadership of Reverend Charles Bennett.
