Description
One of MATHLIB's major design criteria was that it should be "user friendly" but not "expert hostile". In general, while a novice user can start right off in a menu-driven system, it takes only a brief build-up of experience before the menus, and switching between them, becomes tedious. On the other hand, most command-driven formats necessitate extensive training before a novice can even begin. The MATHLIB designers resolved this dilemma using what might be termed a "responsive command" format. Multiple features were included to enable the user to interactively feel his or her way through commands, in effect learning and issuing commands as quickly as one might step through menus in a menu-driven system. These features have a dual nature, empowering the novice user while acting as abbreviations or an aide-memoire for the experienced user. The majority of users don't bother memorizing most commands because they know how to refresh their memories for just the commands they need!
