Photograph dated September 26, 1963 shows Martin Goldsmith, member of the Congress of Racial Equality during a hunger strike at the Los Angeles Board of Education offices. Goldsmith acted as spokesperson for the group during the strike that began on September 13, 1963 and lasted for 10 days. The group demanded that the Los Angeles Board of Education take action to end de facto segregation of city schools.
