Description
Photograph of California national Guard Air Unit hangars, April 11, 1925. In the middle, at center, four men can be seen looking to their right. Behind the men, in the background, two opened air hangars are visible. In the extrme background, at right, a line of trees can be seen.
"These hangars are the property of the U.S. Air Service and are in use by the National Guard of California's Air Unit, Major Moseley Commanding. Major Moseley is the figure in the white shirt. The hangar houses a DH plane of the commandant's and several 'Jennies". The meteorological conditions for take-offs and landings at the Los Angeles municipal airport are excellent. The wind blows in two directions only -- up or down the Los Angeles river valley. The prevailing direction of the wind from sunset to sunrise is North, from sunrise to sunset, South. The only variation is when there is a well-defined area of low pressure in southern California interfering with the tide-like regularity of the local winds. Major Moseley is pointing to the south and indicates the wind direction" -- typed note attached to verso.
