Description
According to this letter, in 1843 Father Francisco García Diego, first bishop of California, authorized Father Jesús María Vázquez (who served at Mission Santa Clara) to dedicate the new church in the pueblo of San José. The second page of the letter bears a beautiful seal made up of bishop García Diego’s coat of arms, which includes an image of Nuestra Señora del Refugio, the Madonna recently designated as patroness of California.
