Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys at Christmas to needy children. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks. It began as a local charitable effort in Los Angeles. The initial effort was so successful that Toys for Tots launched a national campaign in 1948. Photograph caption dated December 5, 1956 reads "Lance Raymond, 7, and Wayne Raymond, 5, of 11621 Keswick St., North Hollywood, contribute toy cow to Sgt. Maj. Frank Freeley for Marines' annual 'Toys for Tots' Christmas charity drive. Main collection station is new Valley Marine Reserve unit's headquarters at 5960 Sepulveda Blvd., Van Nuys."
