Description
This recording is an audio narration of the handwritten annals of the Sisters of the Presentation, San Francisco covering the years 1906-1926. Included in the narration are detailed first-hand accounts of the 1906 earthquake and fires in San Francisco. As well as, vivid descriptions of the conditions in the temporary relief stations, camps, and schools that were created in Berkeley, Oakland, and the few remaining undamaged areas of San Francisco immediately after the disaster. The narration also details the myriad of challenges the Sisters faced in rebuilding their homes, schools and lives in the years that followed, including difficulties in proving ownership of their properties, teaching classes in cramped rental quarters that also served as their primary residences, and securing necessary funding. The recording also touches upon the founding of Saint Agnes Academy, a private Catholic school for young women grades one through ten, on Ashbury Street in San Francisco (1907-1982). As well as, the Sisters' expansion into parochial schools in Saint Patrick Parish in San Jose and Saint Columba Parish in Oakland. The recording concludes with a brief description of the fire that occurred at Ewing Field in San Francisco on June 5, 1926.
